Live Bait Fishing

Live baits are essential for fishing for pelagic species in Key Largo, where the warm waters of the Florida Keys attract a diverse array of game fish. Using live bait is often the key to successful outings, as it mimics the natural prey of these swift and powerful fish.

Commonly used live baits include small menhaden, pilchards, threadfin herring, and cigar minnows. These lively baitfish are abundant in the region and are favored by pelagic species such as dolphin (mahi-mahi), tuna, and swordfish. Anglers typically catch or purchase fresh live bait before heading out, ensuring that they have the most enticing offerings for their target species.

When targeting pelagics, anglers often employ a technique called “live lining,” where the live bait is hooked through its back or lip and allowed to swim freely in the water. This natural movement can attract nearby predators, making it an effective strategy. Additionally, using a chum bag filled with ground bait can help create a feeding frenzy, drawing pelagic species closer to the boat.

The thrill of feeling a powerful strike when a pelagic fish takes the bait is unmatched. The fight that ensues is not only a test of skill but also an exhilarating experience amidst the stunning backdrop of Key Largo’s azure waters. Using a variety of fishing rods and reels, anglers deploy multiple lines behind the boat, each equipped with brightly colored lures designed to mimic the movement of baitfish. Common targets include species like mahi-mahi, tuna, and wahoo, all of which are known for their speed and acrobatics. With the boat cruising at a controlled pace, the anticipation builds with every turn of the water.

The technique of trolling requires patience and attentiveness. Anglers constantly monitor the lines, watching for any signs of bites—whether it’s a sudden drag, a violent splash, or the rod tip bending sharply. When a fish strikes, it’s an electrifying moment as the reel sings and the angler springs into action, engaging in a thrilling fight to bring the catch alongside the boat.

Key Largo’s diverse marine ecosystem enhances the trolling experience. Anglers may encounter schools of dolphin (mahi-mahi) dancing on the surface, while the occasional skipjack tuna might leap majestically from the water.
